Annabel Nowlan

Annabel grew up near Young in New South Wales, one of five daughters of a sheep farming family whose property includes four soldier settler blocks. Following WWI many Australian soldiers eagerly accepted the government's offer of land to raise crops and families. But for many, the reality was severe hardship on blocks of land that were too small to survive on.

The experiences of these soldier settlers and the land itself form the inspiration for Annabel's ongoing body of work. Many pieces tell the settlers' stories through both images and written words, using found materials typical of Australian farming communities, such as wood, corrugated iron, bitumen and tin.

Annabel completed a Masters of Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2002. Her works are held in many private and public collections in Australia and overseas.
