Spencer Shakespeare was born in London in May 1967, and came to Australia in 1995 after graduating from Bournemouth college of art + design. In his work he embraces the life he lives by the ocean, together with the formal qualities of paint; the colour, mark and balance, combining to express an emotional response to his observations and experiences. It is the dynamic of relationships, the human experience, as much as his location that fascinates him. He does this not by rendering a realistic representation of life but rather an abstract impression, to capture that time and place. "My best memories as a child are by the sea on holiday in Cornwall with my family. My father played with my brother and I down by the beach like he was a child again without any worries."
